Talk Talk began as a quartet consisting of
Mark Hollis, Simon Brenner, Lee Harris and Paul Webb.
Talk Talk released their debut album in 1982 entitled The Party's Over.
The band charted in the UK Top 40 with the singles "Talk Talk" and "Today", both produced by Colin Thurston (whose other production credits include The Human League, Duran Duran and Kajagoogoo). The album itself was not a huge success upon release, but was later certified Silver by the BPI for sales of 60,000 copies by 1985.

Steve Harley is a English singer and songwriter, best known for his work with the 1970s rock group Cockney Rebel, with whom he still occasionally tours (albeit with many personnel changes through the years).

In the early 1990s, Harley released several solo albums. His songs "Sebastian", "Tumbling Down", and "Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me)" were included in the Todd Haynes 1998 rock musical Velvet Goldmine. "Make Me Smile" was also included in the 1997 film, The Full Monty.

In 1999, Harley began presenting a BBC Radio programme The Sounds of the Seventies, of which the last programme aired on 27 March 2008.

In 2005, The Quality of Mercy was released under the Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel name, and Harley began touring more frequently.

Tears for Fears covered the David Bowie classic for the NME's Ruby Trax compilation.

Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith formed Tears for Fears in the early 1980s after the dissolution of their first band, the mod-influenced Graduate.

The band has sold more than 22 million albums worldwide
(including over 8 million in the United States alone).

The group is known for its 1982 hit single "I Eat Cannibals Part 1", which reached #8 in the UK and was also a hit in many other countries, including South Africa where it was named the 17th biggest selling single of 1983. They also issued a less successful follow-up, "Dracula's Tango (Sucker For Your Love)". An album was issued containing both singles, together with B-sides and a selection of unreleased tracks in 1983 titled Man o' War. It was not a commercial success. "Milk from the Coconut" charted in the South Africa top 20 as well.

The group's name is Latin and means "by the whole extent of the heavens" or "heaven-wide", but is commonly translated as "completely", "entirely" or "utterly". Of the name, Sheen Doran said, "It has a number of meanings, such as 'heart and soul', 'root and branch' and 'totally different'. It seemed to describe what we were. Plus, it's strange-sounding and hard to pronounce, so it sticks in your mind." The group was renamed Total Coelo in the United States to avoid confusion with the American group, Toto.

The act comprised Helen "Pepsi" DeMacque (born 10 December 1958, Paddington, London) and Shirlie Holliman (born 18 April 1962, Watford, Hertfordshire), who had been Wham! backing vocalists.Holliman's original singing partner, Dee C. Lee, had earlier left the group to marry Paul Weller.
They had two UK Top Ten hits: "Heartache", which was produced by Phil Fearon and Tambi Fernando and reached #2 in the UK Singles Chart, and "Goodbye Stranger", produced by Fernando and Pete Hammond, which reached #9.
Holliman has been married since 1988 to Martin Kemp, a former member of the group Spandau Ballet and now an actor, whilst DeMacque resided in Wellington, New Zealand for a number of years working at a gift shop on Lambton Quay. She now lives in Norwich, England with her husband.
Pepsi & Shirlie returned in 2000 to record their backing vocals on Geri Halliwell's UK number one hit, "Bag It Up".

Vicious Pink was a synthpop duo formed in Leeds, UK in 1981 and active until 1986. With a catchy sound and a penchant for highly provocative and sexualized lyrics, the band aimed for success in clubs rather than commercial hits. Vicious Pink consisted of two members, English/French singer Josephine Warden and keyboardist Brian Moss. The duo began as backing vocalists for Soft Cell, known as Vicious Pink Phenomenon.

It was in 1983 that Howard Jones released his first single ‘New Song’ in the UK.
The expectation was that it might sell a few thousand copies and introduce his fresh new music to an unsuspecting world. The reality was quite different. The single steadily climbed the UK chart to peak at No. 3.

Then came the second single ‘What Is Love?’ which reached No. 2 in the UK and the third single, the enigmatic ‘Hide and Seek’ which showed the spiritual side of Howard Jones’ writing. This was followed by the first album ‘Human’s Lib’ which came straight in at No. 1 in the UK in April 1984, eventually going platinum and which took the synthesiser and Howard to a new plateau.
This success spread across the globe with ‘Human’s Lib’ going gold in USA, Japan, Germany, Italy and Australia.

"It's Alright (Baby's Coming Back)" was released as the fourth and final single from Eurythmics album Be Yourself Tonight. Written by Annie Lennox and David A. Stewart, the track's distinctive brass arrangement was devised by Michael Kamen. The recording was produced by Stewart.

"It's Alright" was a slight return by Eurythmics to the electronic-based sounds of their earlier albums. Driven by a subtle drum machine track, Lennox sings a straightforward ode to a lover returning to her after a long absence. The instrumental passages feature some elaborate multitracked harmony guitar parts from Stewart. The music video, directed by Willy Smax, was a mix of live shots with computer animation, an innovative look for a music video in the mid 1980s.

The single was a Top 20 hit in the UK, where it peaked at number twelve (Eurythmics' tenth Top 40 hit in the UK singles chart).

The original version of Tous les garçons et les filles is from the 1962 debut album of the French singer Françoise Hardy. Like many of Hardy's earlier albums, it was released with no title, except for her name on the cover, but has become known by the title of the most successful song on the album, "Tous les garçons et les filles".

I Can Dream About You - Dan Hartman

Dan Hartman was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
In 1978 he released his "Instant Replay" album and achieved great success. "Instant Replay", the single from the album did well in the charts in October 1978 and was followed by the second single "This Is It" in January 1979.

Success returned in 1984 with Dan's collaboration with Charlie Midnight and the release of
"I Can Dream About You". The single of the same name appeared in the film "Streets of Fire".
"We are the Young" and "Second Nature" were subsequently released as singles also.

1983 saw the OMD lose commercial momentum somewhat,
with the release of their more experimental Dazzle Ships album, which mixed melancholy synth ballads and uptempo synthpop with musique concrete and short wave radio tape collages.
It was recorded by the 4-piece Humphreys/Holmes/Cooper/McCluskey line-up, and produced by Rhett Davies.

"Genetic Engineering" is the first single released from Dazzle Ships.

Duran Duran at Orange County Fair CA

This is a review of the Duran Duran concert at The Pacific Amphitheatre, Orange County Fair Grounds, Costa Mesa, California on July 11, 2009.

Duran Duran is always entertaining. I have seen them at least ten times, including shows when their popularity was at its lowest (in the late 90's).

Most groups from the Eighties seem to draw a mix of two generations of fans these days, older adults who grew up listening to these songs on the radio or teens who were exposed to incessant CD airplay by their parents. For some unknown reason, this particular show was mostly the late 30's, 40's, and 50's crowd.

Simon is still a great front man, entertaining and wooing the crowd -- he is a veteran showman. The rest of the group really laid back on this show, leaving Simon out on his own. Even the charismatic crowd-favorite, John Taylor, really stayed in the shadows and played right through this show without much crowd connection. Roger was hidden behind his drums and the evasive Nick stayed to himself. The band has really put themselves out there in other concerts, but not this one. Fortunately, Simon was up to the task.

The show was listed at 7:30pm but did not begin until 8:30pm. No opening act. Perhaps that threw off the timing if Duran Duran was always scheduled to go on at 8:30pm. They played for 90 minutes. Then another 20-30 minute encore.

For hardcore fans, they seem to have lost their "sixth bandmate" saxophonist Andy Hamilton over recent years. However, the current sax player was excellent.

The setlist was very odd. It was not designed to please casual fans nor hardcore Duranies.

They could have played straight hits for hours, but instead chose to include recent songs Nite-Runner, Red Carpet Massacre, and (Reach Up For The) Sunrise. They also included the little-known Do You Believe In Shame and I Don't Want Your Love (from Big Thing CD), and a cover of White Lines (from Thank You CD). A bonus was Arcadia's Election Day.

Notably absent were Hungry Like The Wolf, tracks from Seven And The Ragged Tiger (The Reflex, New Moon On Monday, and Union Of The Snake), and Power Station hits.

Overall, still a fun show from a band that knows how to entertain a crowd. Still Fab!

The Fixx are an English New Wave band.
They are one of the few bands to have enjoyed significant success outside their country of origin, notably in the United States and Canada, yet remain almost unknown in their home land. The band is best known for their song "One Thing Leads to Another", from their most successful album Reach the Beach in 1983.
Their other hits include "Red Skies", "Stand or Fall", "Saved by Zero", "Sign of Fire", "Are We Ourselves?", "Secret Separation", "Driven Out", "How Much Is Enough?" and "Deeper and Deeper",
which was featured on the soundtrack of Streets of Fire.

Following The Pretenders 1978 signing to Real Records on the basis of a demo of the song "The Phone Call",
the band quickly rose to critical attention with the January 1979 single,
"Stop Your Sobbing", written in 1964 by Ray Davies for The Kinks and produced by Nick Lowe. It was followed in quick succession that year by the popular singles "Kid" in June and "Brass in Pocket" in November, which cracked the American market for the band (reaching #14 on the Billboard Hot 100), and reached no.1 in the UK.

The Pretenders debut album was released in January 1980,
and was a great success in both the UK and the US, both critically and with chart-topping sales. (Pretenders was subsequently named one of the best albums of all time by VH1 (#52) and Rolling Stone (#155).)

That the Pretenders were led by a hard-rocking woman was no small factor in their early breakthrough. With her trademark dark bangs, dark eyeliner, and dark jeans, Hynde appealed to both genders.
And due to, as the 1983 Rolling Stone Record Guide would say, "her sheer authenticity as a three-dimensional woman whose sexuality is completely in sync with a superb rock sensibility," she was able to escape many of the clichéd roles of women in rock music.

Yello is a Swiss electronica band consisting of Dieter Meier and Boris Blank. They are probably best known for their singles "The Race" and "Oh Yeah", which feature a mix of electronic music and manipulated vocals, as does most of their music.

Stellais their fourth studio album. Released in 1985, the album contains the track "Oh Yeah", which became famous after being featured in a variety of movies including Ferris Bueller's Day Off in 1986.
And also includes one of my favorites Vicious Games.

One Vision (12 inch) - Queen

"One Vision" was first released as a single in 1985 and then included on Queens 1986 album A Kind of Magic. Originally written by Roger Taylor about Martin Luther King, Jr., including lyrical references to King’s "I Have A Dream" speech. This song was one of the few songs from A Kind Of Magic that was not featured in the movie Highlander.

Queen were inspired to write and record this song because of the euphoric feeling that came from their performance at Live Aid. The song was included in all Queen's live concert performances of the 1986 Magic Tour, as the very first song of each concert. They claimed they chose "One Vision" as the introduction song because its intro made a perfect concert introduction.

February 2008, Kajagoogoo, under new manager Bradley Snelling, announced their reunion with original members, lead singer Limahl and drummer Jez Strode, bringing the band back together officially for the first time in 25 years.

The band performed at festivals in Denmark, Slovakia and again at Retrofest 2008.

Leslie Howe & Louise Reny
Canadian duo that began as a synth-pop act (also known as One to One),
then became a rock-pop act with their second album. The two also had later incarnations in the hard rock band Sal's Birdland (with Reny now calling herself simply 'Sal') and the alternative rock group Artificial Joy Club.
Howe was also the producer behind Alanis Morrisette's pre-Jagged Little Pill Canadian dance-pop career, with Reny supplying lyrics and vocal arrangements.

Huang Chung (Wang Chung) are a British New Wave band.

The band's first album was issued in 1982. The self-titled album compiled three non-charting Arista A-sides & one B-side, with six other new tracks.
Like the singles, the Huang Chung album failed to chart (China is included here from this first album)

The group found their greatest success in the US with five Top 40 hits all charting between 1984 and 1987 (including the #2 hit "Everybody Have Fun Tonight").

In the UK, their home country, their only top 40 hit was "Dance Hall Days" (#21, 1984).

Voyeur (12" version) - Kim Carnes

"Voyeur"

is a 1982 single release
from Kim Carnes's album Voyeur.

The single reached #29 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts and #52 on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play charts.

The song also achieved some international chart success too but failed to live up to record company expectations, particularly after the phenomenal success of "Bette Davis Eyes" a year earlier.

In 1983, Carnes was nominated for a Best Pop Rock Performance (Female) Grammy Award for "Voyeur".

The video clip for "Voyeur" was directed by Russell Mulcahy who also directed the videos for "Bette Davis Eyes" and "Draw of the Cards"; he was also responsible for many of Duran Duran's videos that defined the early years of MTV.

Visage, a British pop band Formed in 1978, the band became closely linked to the burgeoning New Romantic fashion movement of the early 1980s.

Founder members Steve Strange and Rusty Egan were hosting club nights at Blitz in London at the time and were eager to find new music to play, ultimately opting to create music themselves. Strange commented about the meaning of the band's name: "The meaning of Visage, apart from being French for face, is that the Vis is for the visual side of the band... and the Age is the new age in dance music. That's how I see it."

Initially, the band also included Midge Ure. Ure and Egan began working with Strange during their last days with band The Rich Kids, Strange himself just leaving the new wave band The Photons. The trio recorded a demo which included a cover of the Zager and Evans hit "In the Year 2525". Visage signed to Radar Records and released their first single, "Tar", in September 1979. The single failed to chart, but the band managed to secure a deal with a larger record company (Polydor) the following year.

1980 saw the release of their second single, "Fade to Grey". The single became a huge hit (making the top ten in the UK and topping the chart in several other countries) and was quickly followed by the release of their self-titled debut album which was also a chart success.

Elizabeth (E.G.) Daily signed with A&M Records in 1985, (Working with John "Jellybean" Benitez and Stephen Bray) it was in 1986 that she released the single "Say It, Say It". The song only made it to #70 on Billboard Hot 100, but claimed the #1 spot on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart. Her songs "Shake It Up" and "I'm Hot Tonight" (included below) were included on the Giorgio Moroder produced soundtrack Scarface and were later included in the lineup of fictional radio station Flashback 95.6 in the Grand Theft Auto III video game. These same songs were also included in the Scarface: The World Is Yours video game, which is based on the 1983 film.

She also had a top 10 hit in 1987 with the song "Mind Over Matter" which is featured in the movie Summer School. Daily is a musician as well as a singer; she plays guitar, harmonica, keyboards, and percussion. She also has a track on The Breakfast Club soundtrack called "Waiting".

Daily has most recently released a single titled "Beautiful" that was made available through iTunes on April 29, 2008.

Marc Almond is both critically acclaimed and hugely successful as a singer, songwriter and performer. With Dave Ball he established Soft Cell and had a string of international hits, the most successful being their multi-million selling version of the northern soul song 'Tainted Love'. The song is as popular today as it was in 1981. Soft Cell notched up in excess of 10 million record sales worldwide and established a style that was to influence several generations of musicians that followed.
Marcs most successful solo album of the eighties was the lush and sparkling The Stars We Are which spawned the international hit Something's Gotten Hold of My Heart, a duet with Gene Pitney.
The nineties were another prolific and successful decade for Marc with the albums Enchanted, the Trevor Horn produced album Tenement Symphony. Further top 30 hits followed; A Lover Spurned, Jacky, My Hand Over My Heart and the top 3 hit The Days of Pearly Spencer.

Marc also contributed a Madonna cover for Rubytrax.

SSQ was a 1980s synthpop outfit formed from the already-in-existence band Q

SSQ first released their debut album Playback in 1983 under Enigma Records. The video for "Synthicide" later premiered on West Coast television and brought greater notoriety for the five-member band. By 1984 Stacey Swain was already eclipsing her bandmates in popularity. The band ultimately shifted its focus on Swain specifically, with Moet, West, Skip Hahn and St. James as backup performers. Hahn officially replaced John Van Tongeren on keyboards, vocoder and bass just before the release of Playback.

Robert Allen Palmer (19 January 1949 – 26 September 2003), born in Batley, Yorkshire, was an English singer-songwriter. He was known for his soulful voice and the eclectic mix of musical styles on his albums, combining soul, jazz, rock, pop and blues.

1983 saw Palmer blend techno beats, early sampling and more of the island music of his adopted Bahamas (including steel pan) into the adventurous album Pride. Though the album wasn't the smash Clues was, it did feature standout tracks in the title song and Palmer's cover of The System's "You Are In My System", with The System's David Frank contributing keyboard tracks to the latter song.

"You Are In My System" was an example of Palmer's passion for R&B covers. He jammed the song onto the Pride album after the other tracks were finished. Hearing the track in a Paris club, Palmer rushed back to his Bahamas hometown, where the reconvened band (co-composer Frank included) put together the number.

Young Denise Matthews dreamed of becoming a Hollywood star. She first began doing local beauty pageants before moving to Toronto, where she modeled.

At the age of 18 she moved to New York to further her career. She signed with Zoli Model Agency. Since she wasn't very tall, her modeling career was limited to commercials and photoshoots. Matthews became the face for Pearldrops toothpaste, before completing another modeling stint in Japan. In late 1979 she played a bit part in the horror movie Terror Train, which was filmed in Montreal, and starred Jamie Lee Curtis and Hart Bochner. Matthews went back to Toronto to film the B-movie Tanya's Island. At this time, Matthews billed herself as D.D. Winters.

In 1982, she met Prince at a backstage party at the American Music Awards. Prince re-named her Vanity, stating he saw his female reflection when he looked at her. Other versions of the story suggest that Prince coined the name "Vagina" initially, but she refused and renamed herself "Vanity" instead. Later that same year, she became the lead singer of the group Vanity 6. Their trademark was explicit sexuality in their lyrics, performances, and attire (extending even to the group's name, with 6 alluding to the number of breasts in the group). The group's biggest hit, "Nasty Girl", reached #1 on Hot Dance Club Play and was produced by Prince.

Following an appearance on Channel 4 TV show "The Tube" performing "Relax", the group were signed up by Trevor Horn and Paul Morley's new ZTT record label. With the benefit of Horn's production skills and Morley's off-the-wall marketing ideas, "Relax" came out in October 1983 and slowly but surely took off.
It was already a top ten hit when, in January 1984, BBC Radio 1 DJ Mike Read suddenly realised what the song was actually about,
leading to a total BBC ban on the disc.
From this moment on, Frankie Goes To Hollywood became not just a pop group but a phenomenon.
The record went to number one in the UK, and was a smash hit across Europe and even in the USA. "Frankie Says" T-shirts (some dreamt up by Morley, but far more the creations of small-time bootleggers) became the fashion statement of the year, and anticipation was at such a fever pitch that every subsequent FGTH release that year - two singles and a double-LP - went straight in at number one in their home country, an unprecedented achievement and a triumph for ZTT.

Aligning themselves with disco god Giorgio Moroder, the 1979 single “Life in Tokyo” marked a major turning point for Japan. Already having written several new songs in Moroder’s style, including the later released “European Son,” the caterpillar-lipped producer seemed a likely choice for the band. Now singing with a bit of a shouty croon, the “Life in Tokyo” Sylvian positioned himself as a sort of Bryan Ferry for the coming decade, complete with clipped coif and red leather blazer. Backed by a precision beat from Jansen, wiggly bass and scary saxophones from Karn, icy synthesizers from Barbieri, and atmospheric guitar from Dean, the single laid a good deal of the groundwork for nearly everything the band would create over their next three albums.

Their last album for Ariola-Hansa, 1979’s “Quiet Life,” carried the feel over from “Life in Tokyo,” particularly on the title track. Showing an exponential increase in artistic control and production quality, the album effortlessly moves from the title track's fey disco into much more contemplative album cuts. The album marks Japan's first collaboration with producer John Punter, who had, among other projects, engineered Roxy Music's first three albums and produced their 1974 LP, "Country Life." Japan later hailed Quiet Life" as a major turning point.

Missing Persons, a New Wave band was founded in 1980 in Los Angeles by guitarist Warren Cuccurullo, vocalist Dale Bozzio, and drummer Terry Bozzio. They went on to add bassist Patrick O'Hearn and keyboardist Chuck Wild. Dale's quirky voice and heavy makeup made the band a favorite on MTV in the early 1980s.
Dale and Terry Bozzio met and married while working with Frank Zappa, and Cuccurullo encountered the pair while contributing to the Zappa album Joe's Garage. O'Hearn was also a former member of Zappa's touring band.
In 1980 the band made its first record, a 4-song EP entitled Missing Persons, in Zappa's studio. The band toured, promoted the EP, appeared in the movie Lunch Wagon, and became a must-see band among the Los Angeles live music crowd. "Mental Hopscotch" was a #1 record on local radio station KROQ, and the self-promoted EP sold 7,000 copies.
Two years of hard work led up to a signing with Capitol Records in 1982. With label support, the re-released EP sold another 250,000 units, and the new album Spring Session M went gold.
Several singles followed "Mental Hopscotch", "Destination Unknown," "Words," "Walking in L.A.," and "Windows".
Missing Persons appeared at a three-day Southern California concert known as the US Festival in May 1983, along with Berlin, David Bowie, The Pretenders, U2, and several other performers.
Although the band gained new attention via the striking music video for "Surrender Your Heart" that was designed by Peter Max, the album Rhyme & Reason (1984) was not a great success, and Capitol was not happy about the direction the band was taking. The band followed up with the more conventional Color In Your Life in June 1986, but during the short-lived promotional tour, increasing tensions between Terry and Dale Bozzio led to the end of the tour, the couple's marriage, and the band.

Blue Mercedes were a pop music duo from London, England, made up of David Titlow and Duncan Millar.
Titlow was infamous for wearing purple shorts with the words "Funk Ass" printed on them,
whilst Millar played a large portable synth with double keyboards — they dubbed their musical style 'Street Latin Wolff'.
Their only Hot 100 hit was "I Want To Be Your Property,"
which climbed to #66 in 1988 and spent four weeks at #1 on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart.

Midge Ure was a busy boy in the 80's. He temporarily joined Thin Lizzy before replacing John Foxx as singer of electronic New Wave band Ultravox in 1979.
Shortly afterwards, they had a huge UK hit with "Vienna",
and became one of Britain's top bands for several years.
Later that year, Ure also formed the band Visage with Steve Strange and
fellow former "Rich Kid" Rusty Egan.
The following year, Ure and Phil Lynott released "Yellow Pearl"
A re-recording of the song done in 1981 was used as the theme for Top of the Pops.

Midge also worked as a producer for other artists.

He released his first solo single
"No Regrets" in 1982, included here with its B-side.

In 1984, Ure co-wrote with Bob Geldof and produced the Band Aid hit, "Do They Know It's Christmas?". He and Geldof jointly set up the Band Aid Trust and he remains active as a Band Aid Trustee to this day. He was also the co-organiser of Live Aid.

In 1976 Siouxsie formed the band Siouxsie and the Banshees with her friend Steven Severin on bass guitar. Two years later, they released their first single, "Hong Kong Garden", which instantaneously reached the top 10 in the UK.Their first album, 1978's The Scream, was described by Nick Kent in the NME in the following terms: "The band sounds like some unique hybrid of the Velvet Underground mated with much of the ingenuity of Tago Mago-era Can, if any parallel can be drawn." At the end of the article, he added this remark: "Certainly, the traditional three-piece sound has never been used in a more unorthodox fashion with such stunning results."
Further key albums Kaleidoscope and Juju included the hit singles "Happy House" and "Spellbound".
In 1982, the British press greeted the Siouxsie and the Banshees album A Kiss in the Dreamhouse enthusiastically. Richard Cook in the NME finished his review with "I promise. This music will take your breath away."
In 1996, after recording a series of 11 successful studio albums, Siouxsie and the Banshees announced their split during a press conference called "20 minutes for 20 years".
Her first solo album Mantaray was released on September 10, 2007 in the UK, preceded by the "Into a Swan" single released on September 3. MantaRay was released in the U.S. on October 2. The album has gained critical acclaim. The influential site Pitchfork Media wrote "She really is pop" before finishing the review by "It's a success".

Falco's first hit was "Der Kommissar", from the 1982 album Einzelhaft. Falco's record was a number-one success in many countries but failed to break big in the U.S.

After a second album, Junge Roemer, failed to provide a repeat to his debut single's success (outside of Austria and Germany, where the album topped the charts), Falco began to experiment with English lyrics in an effort to broaden his appeal, and chose a new production team. The result would be the most popular album and single of his career.

Falco recorded "Rock Me Amadeus" inspired in part by the Oscar-winning film Amadeus, and the song became a worldwide hit in 1986. This time, his record reached #1 in the U.S. and UK, bringing him the success that had eluded him in that major market a few years earlier. The song remained in the top spot of the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks and his album, Falco 3, fittingly peaked at the number three position on the Billboard album charts. Ultimately, "Rock Me Amadeus" went to the #1 spot in over a dozen countries including the Soviet Union and Japan. Follow-up single "Vienna Calling" was another international pop hit.

"Jeanny," the third release from Falco 3, brought the performer back to the top of the charts across Europe. Highly controversial when it was released in Germany and the Netherlands, the story of "Jeanny" was told from the point of view of a rapist and possible murderer. Several DJs and radio stations refused to play the ballad, which was ignored in the U.S., although it became a huge hit in many European countries.

The Thompson Twins was formed 1977 in Sheffield, England by three friends
Tom Bailey, Pete Dodd and John Roog.
The name came from the twin detecives in Hergé's comic book series "Adventures of Tintin".
In 1979 they moved to London and drummer Chris Bell joined the band.
Early 1980 Tom Bailey took over lead vocals from Pete Dodd.

In April 1980 they released their first single, 'Squares and Triangles' (on their own label, Dirty Discs) and managed to sell 1,500 copies of the single. Around this time Tom met Alannah Currie who was playing manic wailing sax in an all girl dread punk group called The Unfuckables.
She soon became a full member of the Thompson Twins. In the summer of 1980 Thompson Twins roadie Joe Leeway began to play bongos on stage and soon after was a full member of the band. In early 1981 Alannah gave up the sax and switched to percussion and Joe switched to playing congas.

The Thompson Twins released their first album 'A Product of...' in June 1981. In March 1982 they released the album 'Set' - produced by Steve Lillywhite - and the single 'In The Name Of Love'.
Infatuated by the first single's different sound, Tom, Alannah and Joe tinker with the idea of working together on the side under the name ''Bermuda Triangle''. When the single and album fail to make a substantial impact on the British charts, the group splits in April 1982. The song ''In The Name Of Love'' becomes one of the biggest US dance songs of the decade, spending five weeks topping the Billboard charts. Now as a three-piece, the new Thompson Twins released their first album in February 1983, Quick Step & Side Kick ('Side Kicks' in North America) - produced by Alex Sadkin.

was born in the Marylebone area of London.
His first involvement with the music industry was when he was at art school in North London playing with a band called Bazooka Joe.
After this came a band called The B-Sides. Along with B-Sides members Lester Square and Andy Warren, he went on to form Adam & The Ants.
Their first hit was Kings of the Wild Frontier in April 1980.
After several hit singles, albums and varying line-ups, they disbanded and Adam continued on with a solo career, entering the charts with 'Goody Two Shoes'.
Adam's first solo album was 'Friend Or Foe', the title track being released as a single, and finally giving him a significant penetration into the vast American market.

Devo, a New Wave music group formed in Akron, Ohio in 1973 are best known for their 1980 hit "Whip It", which made it to #14 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Their style has been variously classified as punk, art rock and post-punk, but they are most often remembered for their late 1970s and early 1980s New Wave sound which ushered in the synth pop sound of the 1980s.

Devo's music and stage show mingle kitsch science fiction themes, deadpan surrealist humor, and mordantly satirical social commentary via sometimes-discordant pop songs that often feature unusual synthetic instrumentation and time signatures, and their work has proved hugely influential on subsequent popular music, particularly New Wave and alternative rock artists.

Devo was also a pioneer of the music video, creating many memorable clips that were popular in the early days of MTV, although their use of the video medium dates right back to their very first appearance on stage at Kent State University in 1973, which was recorded with an early black-and-white portable video system.

Pseudo Echo are an Australian Pop band, which were part of the New Romantic movement of the early 1980s. Formed in 1982 by school friends Brian Canham and Pierre Gigliotti, the band completed its lineup with Anthony Argiro and Tony Lugton.

Their first album Autumnal Park was an Ultravox-influenced album that yielded the Australian singles "Listening" (produced by Peter Dawkins) , "Stranger in Me", "Dancing Till Midnight", and "Beat for You". Their climb to success in the summer of 1984 was rapid, and they quickly became the second biggest band in Australia after INXS.
"His Eyes", a track from their first album, received exposure in the US as it was used in the movie Friday the 13th:A New Beginning.

In 2000 they released the double CD Teleporter, which featured 4 all-new tracks, 5 re-mixed tracks, and a live performance in Melbourne featuring all the tracks from Autumnal Park except for "From the Shore", along with a few tracks from Love an Adventure and a performance of the rare B-side "In Their Time".

Since reuniting in 1999, the band has been touring constantly in Australia, and were last seen touring with the "Idols of the 80s" in 2005.

The Mission (The Mission UK in the US) was a gothic rock band formed in 1986 from the splinters of The Sisters of Mercy.

D.A.F. is an influential German electropunk/NDW band from Düsseldorf,

formed in 1978 featuring

Gabi Delgado-López (vocals),

Robert Görl (drums, percussion, electronic instruments),

Kurt "Pyrolator" Dahlke (electronic instruments),

Michael Kemner (bass-guitar)

and Wolfgang Spelmans (guitar).

Kurt Dahlke was replaced by Chrislo Haas (electronic instruments, bass-guitar, saxophone) in 1979.

The name stands for Deutsch-Amerikanische Freundschaft (literally, German-American Friendship) – a satirical reference to the DSF, the East German Deutsch-Sowjetische Freundschaft (German-Soviet Friendship Organization).

The album Alles Ist Gut(Everything is fine) received the German "Schallplattenpreis" award by the "Deutsche Phono-Akademie", an association of the German recording industry.
